Looking back on 4 “myth questions” asked to our nurses in 2019. We call them “myth questions” because they are in fact myths about prostate cancer that persist over time and PROCURE cannot escape them. Enjoy!
My wife does not want to have sex anymore because she is afraid of getting cancer. Can I pass it on to her?
The simplest answer here? No! Cancer is not a disease that you can transmit or catch . Cancer occurs due to damage or mutations in DNA that make up otherwise healthy cells. Unlike other contagious bacterial or viral conditions, it has never been shown that being in close contact with a person suffering from cancer can lead to cancer, that is to say:
- Kissing or exchanging saliva in one way or another, for example by sharing utensils or a toothbrush
- Having sex, protected or not
- Coming into contact with the blood of a person with cancer
- Touching the skin of someone with skin cancer
- Sharing the same toilet seat with someone who has cancer
- Breathing air that a person with cancer has breathed out
I am currently undergoing radiation therapy and my spouse thinks that I, including my urine and sperm, are radioactive. How to reassure her?
The patient undergoing external radiotherapy is never radioactive. On the other hand, the patient receiving permanent brachytherapy may remain radioactive for a brief period thereafter. Still, radioactive grains do not make bodily fluids, such as urine or semen, radioactive. There is, therefore, no risk of transmitting radiation to your partner. In addition, if a grain is ejaculated in your partner’s body, she is not in any danger. The only disadvantage for you during this brief period is that you must avoid close or intimate contact if your spouse is pregnant.
I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I am currently taking supplements and natural products to get rid of it. I wanted to know if the investment of $ 140 per month is worth it and if my PSA rate will go down?
The reality is that the effectiveness of alternative medicine – meaning natural health products or herbal medicines – is not necessarily based on scientific research and has not been shown to be effective and safe in treating prostate cancer. Delaying or refusing traditional treatments to use herbal medicines, natural health products or so-called miracle diets can have serious consequences for your health, including the progression of cancerous tumors or the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.
In addition, for the many people who already use alternative medicine, the lack of scientific knowledge about these therapies can constitute a risk and cause, for example, undesirable effects due to an inadequate dosage, improper use of the product or the drug interaction between two treatments.
My urologist told me that my cancer was very small and confined to my prostate. If I drink lots of liquids, like cranberry juice, do you think I could urinate my cancer away?
The answer is no, just as it will not go away on its own. The question is to know the risk of progression of your cancer and if you should start treatment right away or if active surveillance is sufficient.
