It’s normal to wonder why cancer strikes us or someone close to us. We often hear why me? Aside from age and known factors that could increase your risk of developing prostate cancer, no one knows why you, in particular, have the disease. You weren’t a target, just like other men in the same situation as you.
Cancer is a complex disease and it is often impossible to know why things are happening the way they are. Some people face this question throughout their cancer journey. Others believe they got cancer because of something they did or didn’t do, or worse because they deserve it. It’s absurd! Everyone’s body is different and at any age, cancer can happen to anyone.
Why me? What did I do wrong? What did I miss? These are all legitimate questions. Scientists and researchers are working to find out why some people get cancer and others don’t. Despite all the challenges cancer presents, they are making progress in preventing, detecting, treating and surviving the disease. Still, they don’t have an absolute answer as to why you were diagnosed with prostate cancer (at least for now).
Get the support and treatment you need
It may also be helpful to remember that knowing “why” will not change the course of the disease. Asking yourself this question over and over can hurt your ability to adapt. Your precious energy would be more useful if it were used to help you and your family cope with illness. Try to focus on the present moment and how you can best adapt to the situation you are about to experience. If you find this difficult, it might be helpful to talk to a counselor, your doctor, a close relative, or a friend you trust.
You are not alone
Over time, you will find that you are not alone in your fight against cancer. Your health care team, friends and loved ones are also fighting with you.
And remember: there is no right or wrong way to feel your emotions. Accepting them without judgment is a good way to start your journey of healing from this disease. Be confident!
