You are 50 years old, you are in great shape, you are active and eat healthily. In other words, you take care of yourself and care about your health. So why is it important to know your prostate cancer risk?
Most cancers are caused by many risk factors, but besides age, prostate cancer sometimes develops in men who do not have any of the risk factors described below. Many studies are underway and we will know more in the coming years. However, research has brought to light certain risk factors.
Established risk factors
Age
Usually, it affects men over 50 and its prevalence (the number of cases) increases with age. It is extremely rare for it to occur before the age of 40; when this happens, it is usually due to genetic factors.
If you’re over 50 and worried about your risk of prostate cancer, talk about screen tests to your doctor.
Family history
You are 2 to 5 times more at risk if a parent (father, brother, son) has prostate cancer, if he was diagnosed before the age of 60 and/or if there are other forms of cancers such as breast or ovarian cancer among others, in the immediate family.
If you have relatives with prostate, breast, or ovarian cancer, and you’re concerned about your risk, talk to your doctor. Although the risk of prostate cancer may be higher, that does not mean that you will develop one.
Ethnic origin
The rate of prostate cancer is lower in Asian men, while black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer. They are more likely to be diagnosed at a younger age than white men. We don’t know why, but it could be linked to certain genes.
If you’re a black man and you’re over 45, talk to your doctor about your risk for prostate cancer, even if you don’t have any symptoms.
