8 points to remember after prostate cancer treatment.
We have seen it in previous articles: It is not because you have prostate cancer that you must say goodbye to your sexuality. After a certain period of time following the treatments, the sex drive can come back gradually, and even before you notice it, you might be ready to return to your sexual activities. Here are some points to keep in mind when this moment will come.
- Talking of your concerns with your partner
Sometimes, merely talking about your worries can contribute to calm them. Before a sexual intercourse, take the opportunity to share your fears and thoughts with your partner; this will allow you to feel more comfortable and reassured about potential scenarios that could occur.
- Waiting about four weeks
Generally, it is recommended to wait about four weeks after the prostate cancer treatments before returning to your sexual activities. However, this delay can vary from one to another. Do not hesitate to talk about it with your urologist in case of doubt. They will know how to guide you and will answer your questions.
- Sex does not create recurrence
Unlike what many can fear, sexual activities will not bring back your prostate cancer. So you can get loose into pleasure peacefully without fearing the effects on your situation and health.
- Sexuality is not a marathon
No one is protected against the unexpected, mainly regarding sexual intercourse. If things are not going as expected, laugh about it instead of feeling ashamed; it will allow to reduce the tensions and to put things in perspective. Sexuality is not a race or a marathon. Stop and take a break if you feel that you need it.
- Sex should not go along with pain
The fear of pain can create erectile difficulties, hence it is important to not let this feeling paralyze yourself. However, sexual intercourse should not cause discomfort or pain. If it happens, talk about it with your physician, who will tell you what to do.
- Seeing beyond the performance
Do not forget that sexuality is not a competition. So you should avoid to concentrate on your performance and put pressure on your shoulders to achieve it: this could generate erectile difficulties. Remember that you are there to have fun and that you have the right to take a break at any moment to rest.
- Skin and brain are two powerful sexual organs
Remember that your skin is one of the largest erogenous zones possible and that the most important sexual organ is the brain, not the penis. While concentrating on these two zones, you will discover an infinity of possible pleasures.
- The disease should not dictate your conduct
Do not let prostate cancer or even the treatments you have received deviate you from your path and dictate your conduct. You are the person who can decide, not your treatment nor your disease. Use your imagination and humour to explore new possibilities and create intimacy in your couple.
